This was a collaboration between me and Lorrie Divers, a local poet, as part of the Poetwords and Artworks project in Rochester to see what would happen when pairing two different kinds of artists together -- a poet and a painter. Lorrie and I had never met before this project, but what we discovered was that we both had a passion for the outdoors and often took advantage of the local parks and hiking trails. Several of our meetings to discuss what we would produce took place in some of these parks and while walking among the crisp, fallen leaves of autumn we discussed global issues, with the emphasis on global warming and the affect it is having on different species -- including the human species. The circle form in the middle connects us together with each other, through generations, with the elements of the earth and the other living species. Inside the circle the darker value represents life, and on the outside of the circle the faded color represents death. We cannot have one without the other, however; our circle will become smaller and eventually cease to be if we do not take care of our planet and become environmentally and ecologically responsible. |
