This is a workshop designed to take advantage of the fluidity of watercolor and the texture of pastel. Learn to do a watercolor value under painting and then fine-tune your painting with pastels. Christine Waara will demonstrate how to apply a watercolor under-painting using tube watercolors on Kitty Wallis museum grade pastel paper. Then she will apply pastels to the painting allowing some of the watercolor to be visible through the pastel. Find out how to make the painting “glow”.

Artists will need to bring the following supplies:

• An easel and waterproof back board
• 1 sheet of Kitty Wallis Museum grade pastel paper
• Pastels
• Watercolors
• Watercolor brushes
• Paper towels

Irondequoit Art Club Demo

Christine will give a painting demo at the Tuesday, February 23, 2010 meeting of the Irondequoit Art Club to be held 7:30 PM at Chapel Oaks, St. Ann’s Community, 1550 Portland Ave., Rochester, NY 14621. She will be using reference photos to tell a personal visual story. She will be walking attendees through her process of editing information from the photo. She will show how to select the subject, start with a blueprint, build dimension, and compose with color. She will discuss how to pull together every element of a painting -- including color, texture, value and line -- for a strong composition.

Collective Visions in Watercolor

Christine along with nine other watercolor artists will be having a show titled Collective Visions in Watercolor at the Williams Gallery in the First Unitarian Church, 220 Winton Rd, from Thursday, February 25, 2010 with close on April 5, 2010. The opening reception will be Saturday, February 27, 2010 5-7 PM. The public is welcome.

Featured Rochester Art Club at the Century Club

Christine will be one of the featured Rochester Art Club artists at the Century Club in January. The Century Club is located at 566 East Avenue in Rochester. The Century Club is the oldest women's club in the city.

Penfield Arts Center Classes and Art Show

Christine will be teaching "Drawing 101" at the Penfield Arts Center on Wednesdays from 6:30 - 8:00 pm for eight weeks from January 6th through March 3rd (no class February 17th). Also, there is an art exhibit at the Center's RepARTee Gallery with art from all of the instructors at the Center. The show is running now through January 31st. Christine will be participating in the grand opening of the RepARTee Gallery at the Penfield Arts Center on October 17th from 5 to 8 pm. Watercolor Demo at the Legacy at Willow Pond

Christine will be giving a watercolor demonstration at the Penfield Art Show at the Legacy at Willow Pond on Thursday, October 8th from 2 - 4pm. Penfield Art Association Spring Show and Sale

Christine will be presenting three pieces of art at the PAA Spring Show and Sale. It will be held at the Penfield Community Center, 1985 Baird Rd., Penfield from June 1st through June 7th during library hours with the exception of Tuesday, June 2nd when the show will close at 7 PM for the Judge’s critique.  PAA members only are allowed at the critique.  Opening reception will be Monday, June 1st from 7-9PM.

Penfield Art Association Winter Artshow

Christine was honored to win Best of Show at the Penfield Art Association's Winter Artshow at Barnes and Noble for her piece The Eddy at Twilight. She also received a merit award for her piece Where Sky Meets Land. The final day of the show will be February 26th.

Artworks & Poetwords

Christine is proud to be a part of the Artworks and Poetwords exhibition sponsored by the Rochester Art Club. A unique new exhibition showcases the artistic/poetic process as much as its end-products. Thirty-one artists were randomly paired with 31 poets. Over a period of eight months, each artist-poet team has collaborated--without boundaries or guidelines—to see where it leads them. Almost all the teams were perfect strangers at the beginning of the project.

Monroe County Bar Association Displays Paintings By Local Artist

"The Monroe County Bar Association has recently acquired 10 works by local watercolor artist Christine Waara. Each piece of art is on display on the 10th floor of the newly re-modeled MCBA offices.

As the seasons change, so will the MCBA's collection of Waara's art. Currently, the paintings each have a winter theme. However, when the weather changes, Waara will introduce her spring/summer collection.

The artist works off of several photographs for one painting to invent a story.

Watercolor is a cerebral process, said Waara.

She Did It!

Christine finished the Honolulu Marathon and raised an estimated $7000 for the Arthritis Foundation for which she would like to express a heart-felt "Thank You!" to all who contributed to this worthy effort. Christine finished 14,873rd place overall, 5,860th of the women, and 628th in her division with an overall time of 6:05:53. She summed up the race by saying, "Sure, the winner might have finished in 2 hours and 12 minutes, but can they run for six hours straight in 85 degree heat? I don't think so." Artist's Soul Art Show

Arthritis Foundation Marathon

Painting in Monet's garden, Giverny, France.

Christine is excited to participate in an opportunity to paint in Monet's garden in Giverny, France just outside of Paris. She will be spending ten days painting with other artists as well as visiting Paris for an additional three days. She will be in France from July 31st to August 14th.
