Description
Snorkeling with my snorkel buddies who have taken classes in marine biology at UH is one of my favorite things to do because I learn so much about life underwater. As a Pisces, fish is my sign, so I’ve recently taken an interest in painting them. The humuhumunukunukuapua’a fish is one of my favorites because it is so colorful and its name is so loooong. I love that I visit them in their habitat and they let me see them. Other underwater friends are a little more shy, like the eels and octopuses. The shimmer of the sun-caught reflections onto the sand along with the various colors of the coral and fish is what I wanted to capture in this piece. The Hawaiian word for fish is i’a. I a kai means “towards the ocean” and “kai” means ocean.
