Description
You may know W.S. Merwin as one of the best poets of our time. What you may not know is that he hand-planted one of the most extensive palm collections in the world that covers 19 acres of land that was once claimed barren due to deforestation and erosion. The Merwin Conservancy is a sanctuary for poetry, arts and environmental education, reflection and study. Just before we celebrated his 90th birthday in Maui, HI, I had the distinct pleasure of touring this extensive collection of palms. “Open Palm” is the native loulu palm and was inspired by that beautiful day in his garden.
